We have Broken Up This Exciting Year Long Opportunity Into 4 Semesters For You

Semester 01

These courses will allow you to reach the level of Master Scuba Diver.

SSI Certified International Courses and Academy Programs:

Open Water Diver

As an Open Water Diver you need to complete a minimum of 4 sea dives with an emphasis on skills training. Theoretical training is provided through an online portal and practical application of the skills will be taught in confined water. Upon completion of this course you will be qualified to dive to a maximum depth of 18m

Advanced Adventurer

As an Advance Adventurer you need to complete a minimum of 6 sea dives with the emphasis on skills training. Theoretical training is provided through an online portal and practical application of the skills will be taught through night diving, boat diving and deep diving (not exceeding 30m)

Rescue Diver

This is where you start taking responsibility for other divers as well as yourself. At this point you will find yourself ready to become your own future professional in scuba diving. The course consists of confined water practice skills. You will learn how to do CPR. How to apply O2 and an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to CPR as well as a DAN Training course.

Master Scuba Diver

Achieving Master level is equivalent to reaching your black belt status! You will have completed at least 5 different specialities and will have completed 50 logged dives. At this point you will be a confident diver, ready to become a professional.

Science of Diving provides an in-depth as well as a detailed study of physics and physics laws, the human

physiology, an understanding of the decompression theory, and also DCS and decompression sickness related topics – the theory that an scuba instructor needs to know.

Dive Guide

Dive Guide gives you the skills and experience to safely lead groups of certified divers. This is the first step towards an exciting career as an SSI Dive Professional without requiring you to complete an instructor program. Professional Dive Guides can work for SSI Dive Centers, guiding dives in a variety of environments and conditions. You will earn the SSI Dive Guide certification after completing this program

Dive Master

Dive Master is the first professional qualification where you can start your career as a scuba diver. Once qualified you will be able to take out already qualified divers on a guided dive. At this stage of your career you will have logged at least 100 dives.

Century 100 Diver

Century 100 Diver is the acknowledgement of achieving 100 logged dives!

Semester 03

SA Dive Industry Tour

These days a major component of the dive industry is dive travel. When you get involved in diving one day you will either plan or organize a dive trip for yourself or a client.

You will be one of the first in South Africa to be able to say “I have seen all the dive sites South Africa has to offer”. You will have a firsthand experience diving all these WOW sights.

The trip will involve you researching the South African diving coastline, identifying a list of the most diverse diving locations, planning a tour to visit these locations, meeting the industry leaders based in each of the major diving centres of South Africa as well as gaining experience of diving in all the different salt and fresh water conditions of South Africa.

During the tour you will identify an aspect of the diving industry which appeals to your interest and our professionals will help guide you to find the best suited career opportunity and thereby advising where you could do your internship.

During the tour there will also be a focus on the industry of diving including site visits to:

  • The major equipment manufactures in South Africa
  • The major importers of equipment in South Africa
  • The major international dive travel agents based in South Africa
  • The inland dive industry

Internship Program

During the dive tour you will identify one business in the industry where you would like to develop a better understanding and experience. Assisted by the Academy you can apply at the business or organisation to conduct your internship at the facility.

The Academy will provide both you and the host with a task list which must be completed in order for you to progress to the next semester. You and your industry host will be appraised and this will form part of your overall evaluation at the end of the program.

Semester 04

The fourth semester will consist of the STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers) Super Crew Course which includes Marine Fire fighting, Elementary First Aid at sea, Personal Safety and Social Responsibility, Personal Survival Training and Designated Security Duties. The STCW10 certification is a minimum requirement for anyone wanting to work internationally on Super Yachts.

 Continued Education

With the knowledge and experience gained over the previous 3 semesters you will reach the pinnacle point of the program where you will choose your career path and select your continued education program. Continued education could lead to becoming a professional dive instructor, professional under water photographer, super yacht crew trainee, swimming instructor to name a few.

Meet Our Team

Ettienne Raal

Ettienne started his diving career in Mossel Bay where he did his Open Water Course in 1990.

Four years later he achieved his NAUI instructors certification and has never looked back.

Alpha Dive Centre opened it’s doors in 1994 in Main Road, Strand, opposite the Strand railway station and can still be located there.

In 1999 he achieved NAUI course director status and Alpha Dive Centre became a hub for instructor trainer courses.

Ettienne’s passion for diving, dive training and dive travel can still be seen in the dive centre today.  With the following achievements under his belt, Alpha Dive Academy was a natural follow on to greater heights –

2016 / 17 / 18 Achieved top 5 ranking for training centres in Africa

2018 / 19 Achieved top 3 ranking for training centres in Africa

Kevin Gibb

Kevin is a qualified Metallurgical Engineer based in Cape Town and consults on various engineering projects around the world. Kevin learnt to Dive in Port Elizabeth 25 years ago and is a certified Open Water Instructor. His passion is dive travel and diving has taken him to all corners of the globe but his favourite dive site is still his home town of Rooi Els.

Paul Brits

Paul is an admitted attorney in the High Court of South Africa, with an established legal practice in Somerset West and Bloemfontein. His true passion,  however, is to be found in diving where, since his very first dive, he has been enthralled by the adrenalin filled world found below the surf.

As a certified Master Diver, he has spent many an hour enjoying the sense of calm that diving has brought to his life. He is passionate about sharing the sense of wonder which the scuba world has to offer.
